Capriotti’s is a chain that started in Delaware and the Hillcrest location is their only California franchise. They do made-to-order hot and cold sub sandwiches in small, medium and large sizes. All the ingredients are very fresh and of good quality - their sandwiches are above and beyond any Subway or most local delis. There are only a few tiny tables inside the shop so I picked up some sandwiches the other day and took them over to a friend’s house. *Special thanks to my friend Bryan for the photos since I was a bad blogger and forgot my camera.

This is Capriotti’s signature Capistrami sandwich. It’s combines elements of both a hot pastrami and a Ruben sandwich. In this verision, juicy hot pastrami is topped with melted Swiss cheese, coleslaw and Russian dressing. It’s definitely a messy sandwich but very tasty and satisfying. Two out of the three of us voted this sandwich as our favorite.

This turkey sub was the most pleasantly surprising, taste-wise and check out how huge it is! This is the 12 inch/medium sub. I would like to shake the hand of anyone who can tackle the large size. I though this sandwich would be a plain-old, boring turkey sub but it was made with homemade roasted turkey that was very flavorful and slathered with a hot pepper sauce. This sandwich came in second place.

I had high hopes for Capriotti’s cheesesteak since it came recommended by a few people. As a Philadelphia native, I’m always on the quest for an authentic-tasting version but have still not found anything that tastes quite like the original. My mission continues because this cheesesteak was disappointing. The meat was very bland and had no grill flavor. It was missing the juiciness that a good cheesesteak should have as you can see by how meat juice and grease-free the paper was. This was our third-place finisher.

I love spicy food so I couldn’t resist trying these Habanero potato chips. They were a flame red color but I didn’t really notice a huge hotness increase from regular jalapeno chips.
I really like Capriotti’s Capistrami sandwich and I will definitely go back to try their other varieties of subs. The Bobbie sandwich, which features roasted turkey, cranberry sauce and stuffing, sounds interesting. They also do vegetarian versions of a lot of their sandwiches, using soy substitutes for steak, salami, turkey and more.
Taste: 7/10

Hi Candice,
I had a pretty good cheesesteak at Alex’s Brown Bag. One thing for sure, the wrapper was soaked. I reviewed it on my blog. If you try one let me know what you think, as a Phili transplant. I agree with Kirk, the Capi looks tasty!
Cheers

Being a Delaware native, I was ecstatic to find a Capriotti’s in San Diego. The Bobbie (turkey, stuffing, cranberry) is my personal favorite. the Slaw-Be-Joe (roast beef, russian dressing, provolone) is a close second. The turkey and roast beef are homemade, not deli meats. I have to say, though, maybe it’s all in my head, but I think the quality of this Capriotti’s is a little less than the Delaware shops. I could be wrong, though.
And speaking of cheese steaks, over the holidays i was back east and had a steak from Pat’s in south philly. It was terrible.

Have you tried Philly Franks in San Marcos? It’s on Rancho Santa Fe, right off the 78 in a shopping center with a Rite Aid. I’ve never been to Philly myself, so I have no reference point to compare it to. But I thought it was really good. I have had a few people who are either from there or have eaten the real deal who’ve recommended Philly Franks to me. I guess the owners are from Philly themselves. I know that the bread is imported and for the cheeses they offer cheese whiz, provolone or white american. They also have tastee cakes, and italian ices.

1st Capriotti’s … on Union Street. Next door, Robino’s… down the block from Frankie’s SubShop, and then around the corner from PAPA’s Italian Market… in Saint Anthony’s parish, Wilmington DE. My family is from the neighborhood. If Capriotti’s is interested in Shops in Ireland… let me know. I am a dual citizen, I have a formula for sub rolls or I can get them from Griffin’s bakery in Galway. Ireland has SubWay which pales to a Capriotti ‘Bobby’ or their other products. Ireland is ready..I can help.

Thanks for the review of Capriotti’s. Sounds like I’ll have to pay a visit soon…
For cheesesteaks, have you tried Gaglione Bros or Gotham City Pizza?
I think that Gotham City has the best pizza in San Diego (yes, better than Bronx and Luigi’s). But they also make very authentic cheesesteaks with Amarosa rolls. Unfortunately, they’re closed for remodel right now.
Gaglione Bros I think has two locations, one in Pt Loma and another in Mission Beach. They make a nice sloppy cheesesteak.

The Slaw B Joe is awesome! Had one in Delaware siting in the park under a shade watching people go by.Perfect day.
I have tried to have it recreated in one of the delis here in New York and none cam close. Nothing replaces fresh home made roast beef shredded, fresh baked rolls, and kick ass coleslaw.

How could you review Capriotti’s and not try their signature sandwich? Yes, the Capastrami is really good, but their signature is the Bobbie and you should have tried it…it’s AMAZING. Ever since I moved to the Baltimore area I haven’t been able to find anything like it. Capriotti’s uses all fresh everything, every day, and then they throw out the rest or donate it to charity at the end of the night. Bring me a bobbie!

Hey Candice,
I tried one of the best cheese steaks at Hougans Sandwich Shop. They just opened off of Silverado Ranch and Maryland Pkwy. in Vegas. They have a wide variety of sandwiches, great service, and a cool theme. You definately have to try them out. One of the best sandwiches I have ever had.

I agree at Hougan’s I’ve had the best sandwiches ever. Their meatball sandwich is the best and was told the meatballs were homemade, that’s why it’s the best. There isn’t one thing on the menu I wouldn’t recommened. The staff at Hougan’s is SOOOOOOOOO friendly they make you feel like family.
