Another favorite happy hour spot is Laurel. It had always been a great special occasion dinner place but a few years ago, Laurel was bought by the same group that also owns Chive and Kensington Grill. It’s still an upscale place but the new owner has given the decor a hip, swanky look and the bar is a comfy place for drinks or snacks with friends.

Their ‘7 before seven’ happy hour is a great opportunity to try some of Laurel’s menu and enjoy the atmosphere without paying premium prices. The happy hour, which is offered every night of the week, offers a list of 7 drinks and 7 appetizers, all priced at $7.

A friend and I stopped in the other night to catch up over some delicious bar bites. Above is my friend’s Mango Martini and my Dragon’s Blood Sangria. The sangria was the best version I’ve had in a while - sweetened with port and calvados, an apple brandy.

Here are a couple of selections from the $7 food menu. My favorites were the little sandwiches on the left, Laurel’s version of sloppy joes called ‘lamby joes’, made with ground lamb seasoned with garam masala and topped with caramelized fennel. These were finger-licking good. Our flatbread appetizer was dressed with salty bits of ham and blue cheese and drizzled with a sweet sauce. Also pictured are the addictive edamame which are complimentary. I’ve also tried the short rib spring rolls and the mini escargot ‘poppers’. All portions are pretty generous so it’s easy to put together a decent meal. The ‘7 before seven’ menu makes it easy to treat yourself to a stylish experience without a huge expense!

Top Sirlion Steak (rare) - 10 oz. naturally raised top sirloin steak served with mashed potatoes and green beans.

Dave says: “It was good. Not one of the best steaks I’ve ever had, but it was good. It was tender and rare… just the way I like it.”

Raspberry Chicken - grilled chicken breast topped with melted Brie cheese and raspberry sauce served with roasted potatoes and sauteed vegetables.

This was delicious! I tried the raspberry sauce with the roasted potatoes and I couldn’t get enough! I ate the chicken slowly, so by the time I finished it, it was cold, but overall, the Brie cheese with the tender chicken was a tasty treat.

I wanted a raspberry iced tea, but since they didn’t have it, the waitress suggested Berry Patch Tea. It did not taste good. I think it was plain old tea with red food coloring.

Ki’s Restaurant overlooks the beach and had a nice view of the sunset. There’s seating inside and outside on the patio. The service was pretty good considering she had just started working there… she checked on us several times throughout our meal. It’s a good choice for a date. Try it out! Rumor has it that they offer live music on certain nights.

Mel’s Drive-In as seen on TV! Yes, you may recognize this restaurant from “The Surreal Life” (at least my date did). I had been here a few years ago and met Scarlett Johansson and saw Lindsay Lohan sitting in her car in the parking lot. I thought I’d try my luck again after seeing Mylin at the Knitting Factory…

mels3.jpg

I believe this was my date’s Chocolate Milk Shake - thick and old-fashioned, featuring McGoo’s ice cream.

mels2.jpg

My date also ordered Hot Wings with a side of ranch. He said it wasn’t hot at all.

My late night choice was Mel’s Turkey Burger. It comes with lettuce, tomato, and pickles, but I just ate mine with mayo and pickles. It was a little dry, but the fries weren’t so bad. I still think the Studio Diner’s Grip Burger with the stand-in turkey is one of the juiciest…

What’s nice about this place is it’s open 24 hours! So you can come here no matter how late a night you’re having.

I had heard several people speak highly of the Hash House, but did not have the opportunity to visit until a recent Sunday… I’ve heard you can expect long lines, but luckily for us, it was about 1 pm and we only had to wait a few minutes for a table for six.

Lynn says: “The Flapjacks here are HUGE! This is probably the size of a large dinner plate, with an even larger than normal plate to hold it. The flapjacks taste delicious here but due to the size, you can get tired of it fast. A better idea is to split with 2 or more people because they are best fresh!”

Roasted Pork Tenderloin House Hash with charred tomato, corn, baby green beans, and mozzarella tossed with crispy potatoes and topped with 2 eggs, served with watermelon, and a biscuit.

Dennis says: “There was waaay too many potatoes to eat. So after a while, it got really tiring to eat those. I should have asked them to substitute for mash potatoes instead of the roasted potatoes. Other than that, the rest of the meal was alrite. The roasted meat was juicy and drenched in soft and melted cheese. The scrambled eggs were like any other and the biscuit was just plain hard. Boo hoo!”

(back to Cathy)

The traditional breakfast Roasted Chicken House Hash comes with garlic, onions, asparagus, and rosemary, but I ordered it without the garlic, onions, and asparagus, so basically, I just got the roasted chicken, but it was GOOD roasted chicken! Sometimes a girl just needs some meat without all the filler… and I agree with Dennis, there were too many crispy potatoes and the biscuit was hard. I got tired of eating the potatoes after a while and I tried to break into the biscuit to see if the middle was soft. I prefer McDonald’s biscuits… My two scrambled eggs were also good, but I don’t think you can really ruin scrambled eggs. As for the watermelon, I didn’t try it, but fruit is fruit.

If you’ve never been to the Hash House, you should try it at least once. If I remember correctly, most of the dishes are $10 - $15. Part of the fun is seeing what everyone else around you has ordered. The foot-long mini-tree growing out of your biscuit is an interesting sight. If you finish the super large portions, then I congratulate you. Otherwise, take the rest home and have yourself a merry little leftover treat…

A few days ago was the “Bloggers meet and eat” event at Hawthorn’s in the old North Park Theater. Jim, the Brunch Master, had organized and invited several food bloggers to partake in this dining event. Fellow bloggers who were available to come included Scott and Linda from My Very Own Eating San Diego Blog, Cathy from mmm-yoso!!!, and Lynn and myself of Oh-So Yummy.

Our event organizer, Jim, has eaten at Hawthorn’s on many occasions. He raves about the “Old Chicken” and the Pork Chops that are served here. (Unfortunately, pork chops were unavailable today. Boo hoo!) He also said that the Crème Brulée here was the owner’s legendary and original recipe. What did everyone think of it? Keep on reading, I’ll tell you in a moment! =)

So here we go, onto the food!

(Rollover images for name and price. Click for a detailed photo)

Appetizers: (1) Blue Lump Crab and Salmon Cakes, (2) Ahi Tuna Tartare, (3) Duck Spring Rolls.

Main: (4) Flat Iron Steak, (5) Hibachi Style King Salmon, (6) Fusilli Pasta, (7) Jumbo Driver Sea Scallops, (8) Stuffed Roasted Chicken Breast, (9) Spicey Seafood Fettuccini.

Desserts: (10) Crème Brulée, (11) Pumpkin Cake

Dennis says:

The three appetizers were all pretty good. The crab and salmon cake was my personal favorite. It didn’t taste like traditional crab cakes because of the nice texture and flavor inside. I don’t know about anybody else but it seemed to have the texture of chicken or tuna salad. Very interesting!

The Duck Spring rolls were pretty good too, but they were a tab bit over flavored with sauce. The raw ahi tuna appetizer was refreshing, especially after eating the first two hot appetizers. I like it second compared to the crab cakes.

My main entree, the Flat Iron Steak was excellent. I ordered it medium rare and it came out tender and juicy. It was served pre-cut into multiple long slices and with cranberry sauce on top. The asparagus and carrots that came with the steak were okay. Theres really not much that can be done with it so it was fine with me. As for the mash potatoes, those were pretty good too, especially with the cranberry sauce to kick up the taste.

The crème brulée was nice. I’ve never had it before and it tasted quite sugary and creamy. I like this dessert but I usually don’t eat such sugary things.

Lynn says:
For the appetizers, I thought the eggrolls were decent, with yummy tibits of duck, but they did taste a little greasy to me. Blame it on the whole ‘eggrolls are fried’ characteristic of them so that is to be expected. The crabcakes were firm and easy to bite into, but I could hardly tell there was salmon, other than a tiny flicker of pink in some sections. It looked more like a whiter fleshed fish was mixed in. My favorite had to be the ahi tuna one. They tasted so fresh and delicious, garnished with the saltier olive sauce and placed on a simple cracker. The avocado was a great accent to it too but I tend to stay away from them most of the time.

The hibachi salmon was one of the best salmon dishes I’ve ever had. It was gorgeous on the platter. I loved how the salmon was moist in ever bite and melted in my mouth. The flavor was awesome and the vividly colored sides complimented the whole dish in both taste and appeal. I’ve been eating more bell peppers lately and these seemed to add a bit of zest to the overall dish. The rice and veggies atop the rich mandarin orange butter sauce mixed in perfect harmony and sometimes I didn’t know whether my next bite should be salmon or the sides (or maybe a bit of both)! I tried a few of the other dishes but this was by far my favorite!

As for desserts, I’m not a pumpkin fan, but the Crème Brulée was so good! The top was perfectly toasted and the cream inside was sweet yet not too buttery. I would have eaten more except that anything that tastes this good is probably loaded with calories! My few bites of heaven sufficed.

This place is romantic, full of activity based on the night, and has excellent food. One thing I didn’t like about this place was how we saw about 5 different people come by our table throughout the night, instead of just a single waiter. For tipping, I prefer knowing exactly who the tip is going to based on their service.
