4647 Convoy St # 105, San Diego, CA 92111

I was driving around with a couple of my buddies to look for a place that we haven’t tried before. While we were driving down convoy, we decided to pull into the Seoul Plaza. We found ourselves at Noodle Town with a lighted menu with pictures of different dishes they serve. Underneath the pictures was an electronic marquee that helped advertise their restaurant.

The inside was clean and nice, so we decided to give it a try. We started watching the Korean drama being played at the end of the room while we waited for our waiter (it had subtitles). The waiter brought us ice tea instead of water and brought us the usual panchan.

I always find myself pigging out on the panchan. I was tempted to ask our waiter to bring me a second helping, but I restrained myself. Our waiter was really helpful and he told us what people usually order here. We then ordered the chicken stir fried noodles, bulgogi, and cold noodles.

I didn’t really enjoy the stir fried noodles because it reminded me of noodles that you would get at a fast noodle chinese place. I started eating only the chicken and left the noodles and vegetables alone.

I think bulgogi is just bulgogi and you can’t really mess it up. bulgogi is a pretty safe item to order if you don’t know what to order at a Korean restaurant. The beef was well marinated and wasn’t overcooked. I found myself eating this most out of all the items we ordered.

If you ever order this item, make sure your waiter cuts the noodles for you because they are chewy. Even after our waiter cut it for us, we still have a problem eating it. I was kind of disapointed with this item because I had it at another place and remembered it being really good. The cold noodles here had beef, half a boiled egg, and some cucumbers in it. You might think there is too much sauce in it, but once you mix it up the noodles start absorbing the sauce.

5838 Montezuma Rd. San Diego, Ca 92115. (619) 582 - 5391

Oshi is a small korean restaurant off the corner of College Ave and Montezuma. Its pretty much the only decent asian food near SDSU and within walking distance. My friend goes there during lunch time to scope out the korean and japanese girls. I go there for food.

Unagi Bowl ($7.50) tax included

This picture is almost the actual size of the bowl. Yah.. its pretty small. So don’t expect to get full from eating this. The unagi pieces are really thin and heavily seasoned. Fortunately though, the vast majority of this bowl is plain rice and I was able mix the sauce around evenly. And on the downside, too much rice compared to meat. Ack! There was also some pieces of steamed carrots and brocolli too.

Crunchy Roll ($6.50) tax included

This sushi roll was pretty good. Its not as fancy as the Crunchy roll that I had at Chopstix but its still tasty. And there wasn’t hardcore sauce flavoring all over this one. =)

Overall, I don’t think I would eat the Unagi Bowl ever again or would recommend anybody to get it. It’s not worth the cost to eat or the experience of just trying it out. But I will continue to go here from time to time. They make a good chicken katsu! Yumm.

First, the meal! Look at all this yummy food!

Combination of Seafood & Beef (7.89)

Spicy Pork (12.98)

B.B.Q. Rib (13.91)

At first, the tofu soup was a bit strange, probably because I hardly eat tofu. But, the taste grew on me and I’d love to come back for more tofu soup next time I visit. Although, once again, I’m reminded that I’m not too big of a fan of seafood. I only picked at the seafood inside. I don’t really care for bbq ribs either because I’m too lazy to eat off the bone, but my company ordered it, saying it was the best meat on the menu. I did like the pork, which was not spicy despite the name. If I can’t taste the spicy, then there definitely is no spice on there, but that works for me! The bottom of both meat dishes wasn’t oily the way some korean restaurants seem to be, most likely because the meat was on a bed of onions! Brilliant idea!

As for presentation, these pictures look delicious! They make me want to come back for more! As for service, I honestly never remember much at any restaurant so I rate them all about the same unless it was memorably good or bad.

Buga Korean BBQ Restaurant

Dennis says:

Chau, Nguyen, and I went to eat at Buga Korean BBQ Restaurant today for lunch. Its located right off the 805 freeway on Clairemont Mesa Blvd west.

Nguyen and I have heard about this place from many different restaurant bloggers and we wanted to try this place ourselves.

Side Dishes (Side dishes)

Chau and I ordered the Bento Box Lunch specials that are offered until 2pm. They were $8.95 a piece and were served with great portions of meat. Chau ordered item number 1, Bulgolgi, and I ordered number 2, Daegee Bulgolgi (Spicy BBQ Pork). Both bento boxes included rice, salad, noodles, 2 pieces of sushi, and an orange slice. At first glance, Chau’s bulgolgi looked rather dry and bland but after tasting it, all doubts were put to rest. The meat was very tender and juicy. It was well marinated and cooked perfectly. Mine on the otherhand was a bit awkward. I usually like to order spicy bbq pork at korean restaurants but this particular one tasted different. There was a strange and almost rough texture to it that made me unsure of the quality. On the plus side, this is by far the least oily spicy bbq pork that i’ve had to date.

The service could have been a little better. It was great that the waitress gave us some suggestions on the popular items on the menu, but she forgot to get a drinking straw for Chau. And we never got water refills either! Which led us to go get drinks at Sipz Cafe.

Overall, I really like this place. The atmosphere is comfortable and the staff is friendly. You get your money’s worth with lunch specials. And I think I will come back one of these days to try out their dinner menu (which I heard was excellent!)

Nguyen says:

I’ve been meaning to try this play for a really long time. I think the only thing that was stopping me was that I heard it was quite pricey. We are college students after all and we have to be frugal. I suggested to Dennis and Chau that we take a quick look at the menu before they seat us, so we know what the prices would be like. To my surprise they had a lunch special from 11am-2pm. Most of the items on the lunch menu were under 10 dollars!

The table we were seated at was humongous! I had so much elbow room, I could have probably stuck my elbows out and not be able to reach Chau(she was sitting next to me). I looked at the menu and I immediately knew what I was going to order. Everyone is always raving about how I should try the bibim bap($7.95).

The waitress brought out our food and gave us our side dishes first. They consisted of kimchee, bean sprouts, bean curd, dried small fish (sardines?), eggs, and I believe the greens were spinach. I honestly have to say, I go to Korean restaurants just to eat the side dishes. I just can’t get enough of them. She then gave us our bulgogi, daegee bulgogi, and bibim bap. At that moment my eyes enlarged and I thought to myself, “there is so much food”. I was really satisfied with the amount of food we got compared to the price.

Bibim Bap
(Bibim Bap)

My bibim bap had carrots, spinach, bean sprouts, shitake mushrooms, cucumbers, beef, and topped off with a whole egg. I was trying to figure how to eat this thing because at first I started picking at the individual pieces and eating it with my rice. Dennis corrected me and instructed me that I had to put the whole bowl of rice in and mix the whole thing together. To my surpise it made it better! The rice gave the bibim bap body and I just couldn’t stop chowing down, from that point on. I occasionally had to stop to pour some sauce over it. I’m unsure what the sauce is called, but it was a bit spicey and sweet at the same time and it was very tasty.

Cinnamon

Just when I thought the waitress was coming to give us our check, she gave us 3 more bowls filled with some kind of liquid. Chau looked up at us and said, “is this the thing they give us to clean our hands?”. I was thinking the same thing as well, but I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to look dumb. I gave it a quick whiff and to my surprise, it had a nice cinnamon(ee) aroma. I took a sip of the tea and it caught me off guard because it had a kick to it. The taste had definitely had cinnamon and some ginger and something else I couldn’t quite put finger on. I think it might have been honey. The drink was very sweet and had 2 pieces of nuts in it. I want to say they were pine nuts, but I’m unsure. This drink was my favorite part of the meal.

I have to come back for dinner!
