Nozomi Sushi and Teriyaki (Convoy)

Even though I work close to Convoy, I still haven't tried that many places in the area. One place that does pop into mind is Nozomi because we're fans of the katsu curry and the chirashi bowl. We recently acquired a restaurant.com gift certificate so the setting was perfect for a revisit.

Nozomi Sushi

Weekend nights can get especially busy in Convoy but we lucked out with parking in the restaurant lot around 8:30pm. A few tables were already occupied and the staff permitted us to sit wherever we wanted. The menu had noticeably changed since our last visit and now includes some pictures of the food! They are under new management too.

Since I had some cravings for sushi, we browsed through the available rolls first.

Midori Roll at Nozomi Sushi

Midori Roll ($15)

Right away Dennis picked out the Midori Roll. This lit-up roll tasted absolutely amazing, maybe even in Dennis's top five rolls. There was an ideal balance with fresh salmon, a little citrus bite from the lime, plus a mini kick of sriracha. A nice ponzu sauce kept it midway between dry and wet and the size was plentiful.

Scallop Dynamite Roll at Nozomi Sushi

Scallop Dynamite Roll ($15)

I picked out this baked roll because of the scallops. This came out a few minutes later and was more monstrous in size than the first roll! The outside was wrapped with slightly torched seared salmon while the inside contained plentiful krab mix and avocado, topped with scallops. The whole creation was sans rice and had a very creamy and soft texture. The stronger mayo presence brought it down a little in Dennis's opinion. Perhaps a little less mayo flavor would have made it up to par with the first roll we had. These pieces were seated on a thick cut cucumber pedestal and I ate the first piece without the base. I attempted incorporating cucumber into my next piece but the toppings slipped off immediately so I alternated between bites instead.

asparagus yakitori at Nozomi Sushi   squid yakitori at Nozomi Sushi   chicken skewer yakitori at Nozomi Sushi

Yakitori ($2.50 each)

There were single servings of yakitori so we tried all three available. The asparagus with bacon was a typical implementation and served with two pieces. The fried squid was a little too oily for me, but better when dipped with the sauce. The best sample was the chicken skewer which also took the longest to come out. The chicken thighs were moist but simple without any strong flavors. A touch of salt would have worked for me.

Agadashi Tofu at Nozomi Sushi

Agadashi Tofu ($3.99)

The tofu looked completely different than our visit a few years ago. These came out in gigantic blocks but I guess you get plenty of protein! The ratio was off with less of the yummy fried outer layer, plus the broth itself was watery and too light, even when we tried to break up and soak the tofu longer.

Chicken Katsu Curry at Nozomi Sushi

Chicken Katsu Curry ($12)

The chicken katsu curry is the item we think of when it comes to Nozomi. Another platter arrived at our table with large crispy golden fried chicken next to a moat of curry. The chicken is moist and tasty, and the curry plentiful in sauce and vegetables, with enough rice to soak it up. This dish is a very filling meal.

It wasn't too busy that Friday and the two servers were running around tending to diners.

There are about 8-10 tables inside as well as a patio area with heat lamps. There's also a smaller closed off area to the left of the entrance. Secret meeting place perhaps?

bar area at Nozomi Sushi

Patrons are welcome to sit at the bar as well. There were some younger folks having fun with sake bombs and chatting with the chefs that night. I think that's why all of a sudden, there was a song or two of heavy hip hop rap music playing before it changed back to a top 40's mix... I think it is Pandora or similar music service because I heard a commercial play in the midst of it.

I guess it's a very different atmosphere in the evenings than during the lunches that I usually attend. There's plenty of food though because the portion sizes are generous. We were beyond full at the end of our meal and took home the majority of the curry! Leftovers sound delicious already!

Ooh it's been so long since I've been here. Do they still have the chirashi salad on the menu? Didn't realize they were under new management.. when did that happen? Haha.

they still have the chirashi salad there! the only reason i know they are under new management is because i called the restaurant to ask about the 'official' name (used to be nozomi noodle and teriyaki?). also there's TWO websites for this place online... hopefully i linked the right one =P
