Xiao Long Bao at Din Tai Fung at UTC Mall in San Diego

The popular Din Tai Fung (DTF) recently opened a location in the renovated Westfield UTC Mall of San Diego. Foodies have long been raving about this place but the drive to O.C. and long lines kept me away. That is, until now. A friend invited me to join a mid-week lunch during the first week and I excitedly accepted. Currently, the restaurant is in soft opening mode and only takes online yelp reservations, with most of October already booked! It will return to a first-come first-serve basis after 2 months or so.

Cali Sandwich Stacked at 102 Hub in Mira Mesa

102 Hub opened about three months ago in the Plaza Sorrento Shopping Center (off Mira Mesa Blvd and Camino Santa Fe). Dennis and I were feeling incredibly hungry so we popped in to explore this local spot. We're slowly making our way to new places around the neighborhood including the recent San Diego Snowy Village and Gen Korean BBQ visits.

Walking in, we were surprised at how roomy the space was. To the left were multiple bar height tables, some bar seating on the opposite side, and a loungy area with couches.

Watermelon Snow Bowl at San Diego Snowy Village in Mira Mesa

San Diego Snowy Village is a new dessert spot that opened up in Mira Mesa Mall, a few doors down the long corridor from Crab Hut Mira Mesa. One night we were craving Ding Tea but happened to run into a friend finishing dessert from Snowy Village. This interaction convinced us to change course from tea to snow! We also returned two weeks later to use $10 voucher won from a Facebook giveaway.

Shrimp and Scallop Pasta at Farmer's Bottega for SDRW

San Diego Restaurant Week (SDRW) starts this Sunday, September 23, 2018 and continues until September 30, 2018. This bi-annual event features over 180 restaurants offering a prix fixe meal (several courses served at a fixed price) which range between $10 to $50. We were thrilled to be paired with Farmer's Bottega, a farm-to-table inspired restaurant. For SDRW, an ample 4-course meal was offered for $40 with an optional $15 wine pairing. If you ever wanted to explore farm-inspired fare, this prix fixe meal can get you started! The SDRW menu is attached at the end of the review.

Ahi Tuna taco coastal style at Fish District in San Diego

A heatwave hit our area one summer weekend and A/C suddenly became a deciding factor in where to eat! We had tried Fish District for lunch and this time caught their daily happy hour. Between 2-5pm, they offered $1 off classics, TKO tacos, and beers.

tonkotsu ramen at Wokou Ramen and Yakitori in The Village Pacific Highlands Ranch

It's already been a year since Wokou Ramen & Yakitori opened its doors in The Village at Pacific Highlands Ranch. Having a ramen spot in the northern area of San Diego meant residents didn't have to drive to Convoy or further south for a bowl of noodles! Our first visit was with friends during their busy grand opening and we returned recently for a Tuesday evening media visit.

Hundred Proof at San Diego Reader Burgers and Beer 2018

I've been looking forward to San Diego Reader Burgers and Beer since March! We purchased early bird VIP tickets back then as well as received media passes later this year! As experts on food festivals, we also attended the last two years (2017, 2016). The event has grown from 30+ burgers with one fistful of beer options into a balanced burger to (more) beer ratio! I feel like it just gets better with age! ;)

Gen Korean BBQ House in Mira Mesa of San Diego

Gen Korean BBQ is a small all-you-can-eat KBB chain that recently opened its first location in San Diego. The restaurant is within the busy Edwards Theater plaza off Mira Mesa Blvd and I-15 so there's a constant flow of customers in the evenings. The price of $24.99 is slightly below the other KBBQ spots around town plus it offers over 35 menu items. We've visited twice for dinner since it opened. As far as I know, only Manna Korean BBQ and Roadem BBQ are lower priced but do have limited menus.
