Cine Cafe

I've been going to Cine Cafe for the past eight years since working in the Gaslamp Quarter. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed this place by now, especially since I eat here at least once a week. So I've decided to do justice and review this place by eating seven of my favorite sandwiches in seven days! Just in time for Comic-con visitors too!

Cine Cafe in the gaslamp of downtown San Diego

Cine Cafe is a convenience store that happens to include a deli. Look for the sign or the outdoor umbrellas to find it.

Cine Cafe - Chicken Club Sandwich

The Chicken Club Sandwich is my go to item when I cannot decide on what to eat. It comes with chicken breast, avocado, bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes. It's a good balance of ingredients and flavors. You can also order a Turkey Club as an alternative but I feel that the chicken breast here is better.

Cine Cafe - Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich

You can never go wrong with a Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. The warm marinated strips of beef and green peppers with melted provolone cheese on an artisan french roll is a classic and instant favorite.

Cine Cafe - Veggie Sandwich

One of my favorite items is the Veggie Sandwich (with provolone cheese and all options on sourdough bread). It's a great option for those who want to eat more green and tastes like a salad in sandwich form. On days that I want to cheat I actually order this but with bacon inside it!

Cine Cafe - Tuna Melt Sandwich

Another favorite is the Tuna Melt Sandwich. At first, it doesn't look that big but the tuna and melted cheddar fills you up. This sandwich is toasted but you can actually order any of the sandwiches toasted if you wanted.

Cine Cafe - Triple Decker Sandwich

The Triple Decker is the largest sandwich Cine Cafe makes and comes with three meats and three cheeses. The default ingredients are oven roasted turkey breast, honey ham, roast beef, provolone cheese, swiss, and cheddar. It sounds like an amazing set of ingredients but I feel like this selection of meats don't work together that well. Fortunately, you can substitute for whatever meats you like. My combination is roast beef, pastrami, and corned beef. Also, if you don't feel hungry enough you can order the Double Decker which is just two meats and two cheeses.

Cine Cafe - Triple Decker Sandwich

For reference, this is how huge the sandwiches look when you order them on the round wheat bread. It's basically the same kind of bread you'd get with a torta sandwich. As you can see, the sandwich completely fills a to go box container. This sandwich can easily feed two people. Or as I like to do, eat half today, and finish the other half for lunch tomorrow. Score! Cheap meal in the Gaslamp.

Cine Cafe - Reuben Sandwich

Another classic is the Reuben Sandwich which is comprised of corned beef, sauerkraut, melted swiss, and thousand island dressing on a rye. You can also order the New York which is the same ingredients plus pastrami.

Cine Cafe - BLT Bacon Lettuce Tomato Sandwich

This one here is one of the most deadliest sandwiches you will ever eat. Behold, the BLT Sandwich! It comes with a generous amount of bacon that will either satisfy your need for something greasy or turn you off after eating partway because it is too greasy.

There are actually quite a lot more sandwiches available at Cine Cafe other than what I have already listed. You can also pickup pre-made sandwiches, meal combos, and salads from the counter if you're in a hurry. This is especially convenient for those who attend the San Diego Comic Con International or any other conferences nearby!

Do yourself a favor and try the sandwiches at Cine Cafe. The sandwiches are fresh, tasty, and the shop is located just two blocks from the convention center. Once you go here, you won't even consider going to that other sandwich shop down the street (ahem! Subway).
